God and Caesar

¹³ Then they sent some of the Pharisees and the Herodians to Him to trap Him by what He said.^[a] 14 When they came, they said to Him, “Teacher, we know You are truthful and defer to no one, for You don’t show partiality^[b] but teach truthfully the way of God. Is it lawful to pay taxes to Caesar or not? ¹⁵ Should we pay, or should we not pay?”

But knowing their hypocrisy, He said to them, “Why are you testing Me? Bring Me a denarius to look at.” ¹⁶ So they brought one. “Whose image and inscription is this?” He asked them.

“Caesar’s,” they said.

¹⁷ Then Jesus told them, “Give back to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s, and to God the things that are God’s.” And they were amazed at Him.

The Sadducees and the Resurrection

¹⁸ Some Sadducees, who say there is no resurrection, came to Him and questioned Him: ¹⁹ “Teacher, Moses wrote for us that if a man’s brother dies, leaves his wife behind, and leaves no child, his brother should take the wife and produce offspring for his brother.^[c] 20 There were seven brothers. The first took a wife, and dying, left no offspring. ²¹ The second also took her, and he died, leaving no offspring. And the third likewise. ²² So the seven^[d] left no offspring. Last of all, the woman died too. ²³ In the resurrection, when they rise,^[e] whose wife will she be, since the seven had married her?”^[f]

²⁴ Jesus told them, “Are you not deceived because you don’t know the Scriptures or the power of God? ²⁵ For when they rise from the dead, they neither marry nor are given in marriage but are like angels in heaven. ²⁶ Now concerning the dead being raised—haven’t you read in the book of Moses, in the passage about the burning bush, how God spoke to him: I am the God of Abraham and the God of Isaac and the God of Jacob?^[g] 27 He is not God of the dead but of the living. You are badly deceived.”

Questions:

1.       Why were the Pharisees and Herodians asking Jesus if it was right to pay taxes to Caesar or not?

A.     They did that because they wanted to trap him.  If Jesus says YES, then He would be saying that He ultimately agrees that Caesar is a God, or King. If he says No, then Jesus is saying He is against Caesar and people would want to hurt Him. 

2.      Why were they trying to trap Jesus?

A.     They were trying to get Jesus in trouble with either Caesar or with the people that are following Him.  He would lose credibility if he says Yes, and the Roman guards would arrest Him if he didn’t agree that Caesar was a God. 

3.      What does Jesus need a coin for?

A.     He will show everyone that Caesar is on the coin, so it belongs to Caesar.  What belongs to Caesar is Caesar’s, and what belongs to God, is God’s.  

Mark 12:1-12

Then he leased it to tenant farmers and went away. ² At harvest time he sent a slave to the farmers to collect some of the fruit of the vineyard from the farmers. ³ But they took him, beat him, and sent him away empty-handed.⁴ Again he sent another slave to them, and they^[a] hit him on the head and treated him shamefully.^[b] 5 Then he sent another, and they killed that one. He also sent many others; they beat some and they killed some.
⁶ “He still had one to send, a beloved son. Finally he sent him to them, saying, ‘They will respect my son.’
⁷ “But those tenant farmers said among themselves, ‘This is the heir. Come, let’s kill him, and the inheritance will be ours!’ ⁸ So they seized him, killed him, and threw him out of the vineyard.
⁹ “Therefore, what will the owner^[c] of the vineyard do? He will come and destroy the farmers and give the vineyard to others. ¹⁰ Haven’t you read this Scripture:
The stone that the builders rejected has become the cornerstone.^[d]11 This came from the Lord
and is wonderful in our eyes?”^[ and is wonderful in our eyes?”^[ and is wonderful in our eyes?”^[e]12 Because they knew He had said this parable against them, they were looking for a way to arrest Him, but they were afraid of the crowd. So they left Him and went away.

Messiah’s Authority Challenged

²⁷ They came again to Jerusalem. As He was walking in the temple complex, the chief priests, the scribes, and the elders came ²⁸ and asked Him, “By what authority are You doing these things? Who gave You this authority to do these things?”

²⁹ Jesus said to them, “I will ask you one question; then answer Me, and I will tell you by what authority I am doing these things. ³⁰ Was John’s baptism from heaven or from men? Answer Me.”

³¹ They began to argue among themselves: “If we say, ‘From heaven,’ He will say, ‘Then why didn’t you believe him?’ ³² But if we say, ‘From men’”—they were afraid of the crowd, because everyone thought that John was a genuine prophet. ³³ So they answered Jesus, “We don’t know.”

And Jesus said to them, “Neither will I tell you by what authority I do these things.”

Questions:

1.       Why were the priests, scribes, and elders upset at Jesus?

A.     He destroyed the money making opportunity the day before and people were more interested in Jesus than the church officials. This made them upset.

2.      Why do you think the leaders of the church ask Jesus the question, “By what authority are you doing these things?”

A.     To see if Jesus will say that God has sent Him, that He is the Christ King.

3.      What are these things the leaders are questioning Him about?

A.     All the miracles Jesus preformed.  Say some 

4.      Jesus responds with a question, “Was John’s baptism from heaven or from men?” What does that mean?

A.     If John was from heaven then that means that John was blessed by God and sent by God, and his message was about the second coming of Christ who is Jesus.  That means that if the leader say this they agree that Jesus is the King. If they say John is from men then all the people in the crowed will explode with anger because they all believed John was a prophet.  It is a lose, lose situation for the church leaders.

The Barren Fig Tree Is Cursed

¹² The next day when they came out from Bethany, He was hungry. ¹³ After seeing in the distance a fig tree with leaves, He went to find out if there was anything on it. When He came to it, He found nothing but leaves, because it was not the season for figs. ¹⁴ He said to it, “May no one ever eat fruit from you again!” And His disciples heard it.

Cleansing the Temple Complex

¹⁵ They came to Jerusalem, and He went into the temple complex and began to throw out those buying and selling in the temple. He overturned the money changers’ tables and the chairs of those selling doves, ¹⁶ and would not permit anyone to carry goods through the temple complex.

¹⁷ Then He began to teach them: “Is it not written, My house will be called a house of prayer for all nations?^[a] But you have made it a den of thieves!”^[b]18 Then the chief priests and the scribes heard it and started looking for a way to destroy Him. For they were afraid of Him, because the whole crowd was astonished by His teaching.

¹⁹ And whenever evening came, they would go out of the city.

The Barren Fig Tree Is Withered

²⁰ Early in the morning, as they were passing by, they saw the fig tree withered from the roots up. ²¹ Then Peter remembered and said to Him, “Rabbi, look! The fig tree that You cursed is withered.”

²² Jesus replied to them, “Have faith in God. ²³ I assure you: If anyone says to this mountain, ‘Be lifted up and thrown into the sea,’ and does not doubt in his heart, but believes that what he says will happen, it will be done for him.²⁴ Therefore I tell you, all the things you pray and ask for—believe that you have received^[c] them, and you will have them. ²⁵ And whenever you standpraying, if you have anything against anyone, forgive him, so that your Fatherin heaven will also forgive you your wrongdoing. [²⁶ But if you don’t forgive, neither will your Father in heaven forgive your wrongdoing.]”^[d][e]

Questions:

1.      Why did Jesus cures the fig tree?

A.    Because it didn’t have fruit on it.

2.     Why is Jesus mad about people selling animals on Temple property?

A.    It was a place of worship, not the selling of animals between robber and crooks. 

3.     What is the Passover all about?

4.     Why does Jesus flip all the tables over?

A.    Because people shouldn’t sell these items on the temple mount and they are selling them for an unfair price. 

5.     What does the dead tree represent?

A.    It represents our faith in Christ if we don’t believe in Him, or if we don’t have faith in Him, or if we don’t repent of our sins.  

From Family to SCHOOL!!!!

We will not be adopting a family this Christmas season, but a school full of needy children.  We will be collecting kid size shoes through the month of January to be delivered to Jackson Elementary in Fresno.(Upper Grade sizes, 2 to 10) Our friends, The Rio's Family, said the need for upper graders to have shoes is in high demand.  Their children are now in sports and they see kids running with no shoes on!  We would like to collect as many new shoes as possible to give to these kids in need.

On the inside of each shoe box I would like our kids to write a special Note/Prayer for the student receiving these shoes.  We will start collect as soon as possible and continue collecting shoes through the month of January,

The Rich Young Ruler

¹⁷ As He was setting out on a journey, a man ran up, knelt down before Him, and asked Him, “Good Teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?”

¹⁸ “Why do you call Me good?” Jesus asked him. “No one is good but One—God.¹⁹ You know the commandments:

Do not murder;
do not commit adultery;
do not steal;
do not bear false witness;
do not defraud;
honor your father and mother.”^[a]

²⁰ He said to Him, “Teacher, I have kept all these from my youth.”

²¹ Then, looking at him, Jesus loved him and said to him, “You lack one thing: Go, sell all you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come,^[b] follow Me.” ²² But he was stunned^[c] at this demand, and he went away grieving, because he had many possessions.

Questions:

1.   What does Jesus mean when he says no one is good, but God alone?

A.   What Jesus meant was that no one can be a perfect and loving as God. 

2.   What did the man mean by inheriting eternal life?

A.   The man wants to be with God and Jesus forever.  He wants to go to heaven.

3.   What type of person was the rich young ruler?

A.   He was obedient to the Law of God.  He followed God’s commandments.  He would be considered to be a Godly man. 

4.   Why did the man’s face fall with sadness?

A.   Because he had many possessions, he was rich.

5.   Think about your riches and how hard they would be to give up!!!!!

Summary:

In Mark chapter 10 verses 17-22, Mark writes about what a young man must do to enter the Kingdom of Heaven.  Jesus told the man to sell everything he had and follow Him.  Which basically means to follow Jesus and not rely on your possessions for comfort.  It doesn’t matter how much wealth you have on Earth, the greater treasure is in Heaven.

The Question of Divorce

10 He set out from there and went to the region of Judea and across the Jordan. Then crowds converged on Him again and, as He usually did, He began teaching them once more. ² Some Pharisees approached Him to test Him. They asked, “Is it lawful for a man to divorce his wife?”

³ He replied to them, “What did Moses command you?”

⁴ They said, “Moses permitted us to write divorce papers and send her away.”

⁵ But Jesus told them, “He wrote this command for you because of the hardness of your hearts. ⁶ But from the beginning of creation God^[a] made them male and female.^[b]

⁷ For this reason a man will leave
his father and mother
[and be joined to his wife],^[c]
8 and the two will become one flesh.^[d]

So they are no longer two, but one flesh. ⁹ Therefore what God has joined together, man must not separate.”

¹⁰ Now in the house the disciples questioned Him again about this matter.¹¹ And He said to them, “Whoever divorces his wife and marries another commits adultery against her. ¹² Also, if she divorces her husband and marries another, she commits adultery.”

Blessing the Children

¹³ Some people were bringing little children to Him so He might touch them, but His disciples rebuked them. ¹⁴ When Jesus saw it, He was indignant and said to them, “Let the little children come to Me. Don’t stop them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these. ¹⁵ I assure you: Whoever does not welcome^[e]the kingdom of God like a little child will never enter it.” ¹⁶ After taking them in His arms, He laid His hands on them and blessed them.

A: The Pharisees wanted to test Jesus and leave Him in a pickle.

    2. What does adultery mean?

A: Adultery means to cheat on your husband or wife.

    3. What does it mean when Jesus said,”A man will leave his father and mother?

A: It means that the man will leave his mother and father to create his own family.

   4. Why did the disciples rebuke the little children?

A: They did not think the little kids were worthy enough to see Jesus.

    Answer:  He was able to cast out the demon because he had the holy spirit in him, because he believes in God

Jackson”s Question:What does it mean to give something to someone in God’s name?

    Answer:  This means that when you give something to a person, believer or nonbeliever, you are giving it to Jesus, because that person is God’s child.

Jackson’s Question:  Why does it Jesus say that it’s better to live life lame,maimed,or with one hand than to go to hell?

    Answer:  It says this because he’s saying it’s way better to go to heaven than to go to hell, but he doesn’t actually mean to cut off your hand or foot, he’s just using it as an example.

Kyle”s Question:  What does it mean to have salt in your life?

    Answer:  To have salt in yourself means to have preserve and give flavor to the Earth.

Summary by Andrew:

In Mark chapter 9 verse 38-50 Jesus talks about temptation.  Jesus says that having temptation over anything causes us to sin and takes away focus on God.  In verse 43 it says, “If your hand causes you to sin, cut it off.  It is better for you to enter heaven maimed than with 2 hands in hell.”  What this is all referring to is that we need to cut sin out of our lives.  As followers of Christ discipline is required in removing sin, no matter how hard it hurts us.  Nothing shall stand in the way of your faith.

The Second Prediction of His Death

³⁰ Then they left that place and made their way through Galilee, but He did not want anyone to know it. ³¹ For He was teaching His disciples and telling them,“The Son of Man is being betrayed^[a] into the hands of men. They will kill Him, and after He is killed, He will rise three days later.” ³² But they did not understand this statement, and they were afraid to ask Him.

Who is the Greatest?

³³ Then they came to Capernaum. When He was in the house, He asked them,“What were you arguing about on the way?” ³⁴ But they were silent, because on the way they had been arguing with one another about who was the greatest.³⁵ Sitting down, He called the Twelve and said to them, “If anyone wants to be first, he must be last of all and servant of all.” ³⁶ Then He took a child, had him stand among them, and taking him in His arms, He said to them, ³⁷ “Whoever welcomes^[b] one little child such as this in My name welcomes Me. And whoever welcomes Me does not welcome Me, but Him who sent Me.

Questions:

1.   Why do think the Son of Man tells His disciples that He must die?

A.   He wants to prepare them for when He dies.  He wants them to understand that He must die. Even though they don’t understand

2.   Why do you think Jesus taught His disciples alone?

A.   He didn’t want to be mobbed or questioned by all the people.

3.   Why do you think the disciples didn’t want to ask Jesus about His death?

A.   It would be weird and awkward and they were confused about His decision. Plus what happened to Peter after he told Jesus he can’t die. 

4.   What were the disciples talking about on the side of the road?

A.   Who’s the greatest

5.   Why must we be last of all and servant of all?

A.   We must be a servant to all and last of all because we must humble ourselves, we must look at the needs of others, lower ourselves and raise up others.  We must have childlike faith

Summary

Jesus told His disciples that He must be betrayed by another and die, then raise from the dead 3 days later.  The disciples were confused.  After some time the discples are arguing about who is the greatest among them.  Jesus puts them in their place by telling them, “Whoever welcomes one little child in My name, welcomes Me.  We must humble ourselves and honor Christ.

Audience Question:Peter calls Jesus rabbi in verse five. What does rabbi mean?

    Answer: Rabbi means a jewish scholar qualified to rule on questions of Jewish law.

Question: Who are Elijah and Moses?

Answer:Elijah is one of the most important prophets in the old testament. He lived to serve God and performed many miracles for God. Moses was a leader for God and also performed many miracles. Although he never entered the promise land he led his people to it.

Question:How did Elijah and Moses appear with Jesus on the mountain, and then disappear?

Answer: Since Moses and Elijah are already dead, the cloud and God’s voice in the cloud, was proof that God put them there.

Question: Why do you think it says the son of Man must suffer and be treated with contempt?

    Answer: I think it says that the Son of Man must suffer and be treated with contempt because he’s persecuted a lot and he ends up being crucified..

Prayer

Dear Heavenly Father. Thank you for this day as we got to come to FCA to learn more about you through the Bible. I pray for the firemen as they’re trying to put the fire out around hume lake. also I pray for students as they can do good on their test. In Jesus name amen.

Summary

    Throughout Mark 9:1-13, Jesus takes Peter, James, and John up a mountain.  There he transforms in front of them into dazzling and extremely white and Moses and Elijah appear talking to him.  Then, God’s voice is heard from a cloud saying, “This is My beloved Son; listen to Him!”  After that, Jesus transforms back and says to not say anything until he has risen from the dead, and the disciples were puzzled about what that meant. They then asked Jesus why Elijah must come first. Jesus answered saying,“Elijah does come first and restores everything”
