Galatians 3:10-18

Galatians 3:10-18
Law and Promise
10 For all who rely on the works of the law are under a curse, because it is written: Everyone who does not continue doing everything written in the book of the law is cursed.[a] 11 Now it is clear that no one is justified before God by the law, because the righteous will live by faith.[b] 12 But the law is not based on faith; instead, the one who does these things will live by them.[c] 13 Christ has redeemed us from the curse of the law by becoming a curse for us, because it is written: Everyone who is hung on a tree is cursed.[d] 14 The purpose was that the blessing of Abraham would come to the Gentiles by Christ Jesus, so that we could receive the promised Spirit through faith.
15 Brothers, I’m using a human illustration.[e] No one sets aside or makes additions to even a human covenant[f] that has been ratified. 16 Now the promises were spoken to Abraham and to his seed. He does not say “and to seeds,” as though referring to many, but referring to one, and to your seed,[g] who is Christ. 17 And I say this: The law, which came 430 years later, does not revoke a covenant that was previously ratified by God[h] and cancel the promise. 18 For if the inheritance is from the law, it is no longer from the promise; but God granted it to Abraham through the promise.
Questions:

1.      In verse 10, who were the people “who rely on the works of the law”?

A: The people “ who rely on the works of the law” were people that thought that by obeying God’s commandments, they would get to go to heaven.

     2.    What curse is being referred to in verse 10?

A: The curse that is being referred to is in Genesis 3 when God sentenced Adam and Eve to die by kicking them out of the garden and cutting them off of the tree of life.  Also in Romans 6:23, “the wages of sin is death”.

     3. In Galatians 3:13, how has Christ redeemed us from the “curse of the law”?

A: Christ has redeemed us by living a sinless life and being crucified on a cross for our sins, not his own.

     4. In Galatians 3:14 what Blessings of Abraham is being referred to?

A: God promised Abraham that if he trusted him, God would bless him and his seed/offspring.

      5. In Galatians verse 16,chapter 3, who is the seed/offspring, that would receive God's blessing if Abraham trusted God?

A: God said if Abraham trusted him he would bless Abraham and his seed/offspring, Christ.

     6. In Galatians 3:17-18, What does Paul say about the law which God gave Moses 430 years after God promise to Abraham.

A: Paul says that the law does not cancel God’s promise to Abraham.  Despite the law, God’s promise remains for Abraham and for Christ (and therefore, for all who are in Christ.)

Summary:
In Galatians chapter 3 verses 10-18, Paul stresses that those who try to be right with God by obeying his commands (the law) are doomed.  No one has ever kept God’s law except Christ.  The only way to be right with God is to trust him, or in other words, live by faith.  God’s promise to Abraham 4,000 years ago still stands.  Because of Abraham’s faith, God blessed him and Christ (and therefore all who are in Christ... like us, if we have put our trust in him!)

Prayer:
Dear God,
Thank you for Mr.Alfaro, Mr.Beaty, and Mrs.Drake for giving up their Friday mornings to teach us about you. I pray that everyone in here could take something out of this today and that we can show it on campus. Help us be lights also. I pray that we will do well on our tests today and that we can have a fantastic Friday. I pray that we can get some other students to join FCA. I pray that the message today can sink in and that we can use it in our everyday lives.
And all God’s people said, Amen
